Eating disorders not only affect the individual struggling with the condition but also have profound implications for their family members. Family dynamics can be strained as caregivers navigate feelings of guilt, frustration, and helplessness while witnessing their loved one’s struggle. Additionally, family members may unintentionally contribute to the maintenance of the eating disorder through behaviors or communication patterns.

The Role of Family Therapy

Family therapy provides a safe and supportive space for family members to address the impact of the eating disorder and work collaboratively toward recovery. Therapists facilitate open communication and provide families with emotional and behavioral coaching skills and tools to support their loved ones’ healing.

Parents are often terrified of setting limits with their children who are suffering from an eating disorder. Usually, this is driven by fear. And we get this! It is so frightening when you’re loved one is struggling with an eating disorder, and you’re not sure about how best to support them. Family members can learn ways of offering support and encouragement while lovingly setting limits and encouraging health-driven behaviors.
